Dos with certain medical conditions benefit from a diet that has a higher carbohydrate content rather than a high protein and fat diet.

In answer to the question can I feed my dog eggs every day I would recommend not to overdo it.

One of the obvious side effects of too many eggs is they may give your dog gas. This means an upset stomach, possibly diarrhea and of course, smelly farts.

One concern people have with eggs is that egg whites contain enzyme inhibitors which may affect digestion in younger and older dogs. Egg whites have also been linked to creating a biotin (a B vitamin) deficiency. However, it would take a large volume of eggs for this to be a factor. On the flip side, egg yolks are rich in biotin.

So if you do feed your dog eggs, ensure you give them the whole egg. Not just the egg whites.

Can dogs eat eggshells

Yes, dogs can eggshells. They are actually a good source of calcium. However, it would take a large volume of eggshells to get any significant amount of calcium.

If you are wanting to supplement your dog’s calcium levels, a calcium supplement would be more effective. If you are unsure whether or not your dog needs a calcium supplement, consult your vet.

Overdosing a dog with calcium can actually be harmful, especially in puppies and young dogs that are still growing.

By growing a puppies bones too quickly can lead to skeletal and bone issues later in life.

A concern people have about giving their dog raw eggs is that they may contain salmonella.

Dogs are well equipped to handle the bacteria in raw foods. They have a short digestive tract and an acidic stomach. This aids to avoid bacterial infection.

Proper storage and keeping the eggs cool will also go a long way toward keeping the harmful bacteria at a manageable level.

Obviously, don’t feed eggs that are rotten. A simple way to tell if an egg is ok to eat is to put it in cold water. If it sinks to the bottom and lays on its side it is fine. If it floats to the top throw it away.  If the egg is a few weeks old but still good to eat, it will stand on one end at the bottom of the bowl.

Bottom line

Eggs can be a healthy supplement to your dog’s diet. However, I wouldn’t recommend giving your dog eggs every day. You can have too much of a good thing. A couple of times a week is probably sufficient.
