We all can agree that puppies are naturally curious and seem to be bubbling with energy most of the time. And there will be times when they will be curling up with you. One of the major issues you will face with puppies is that you will have to be persistent while house training them as they are manipulative and independent and are happy to go through life without training.
A puppy does not develop full control over his bladder until he is 4 or 5 months old and since they grow and develop rapidly during this phase, they need to eliminate more frequently than an adult dog.
So here is how you can stop your puppy from peeing in the house:
Crate your puppy
Since dogs have a natural propensity to not to soil their den or sleeping area, your puppy will not eliminate in its crate and will be more likely to eliminate once taken outside.
Take your dog out to a designated spot
Choose a spot and take your pup to do its business and make sure it is close by so it doesn’t have to control its bladder for long. Puppies don’t like rainy and wet areas so it is your responsibility to choose the spot which is protected from rain otherwise this will really make your life difficult if they refuse to go outside
Make a time-table for your puppy
Your pup needs to be taken out on regular intervals in order to train them to eliminate outside. You may also try taking them out on the given schedule:
- First thing in the morning
- Last thing before you go to bed
- After you come home
Don’t leave your puppy out and about unattended
Never leave your pup out and unattended during training. Running free is an open invitation for them to make a mess of your house. You need to confine them to their kennel or crate.
One command
Potty training one puppy is no different than training any other puppy. Keep one command like ˜GO POTTY, POTTY, HURRY UP which you might be able to say loudly without feeling embarrassed. This way your dog forms an association between the right command and his actions.
Correct their bad behavior
The best way to correct your dog is when they are in the act and not after they are done. You can correct their behavior by just saying a sharp and loud NO so they know that you are not pleased.
Be patient. You need to remember that your pup is learning a new skill and it takes time to adapt. You need to help your pup to adapt with love and support and occasional scolding (when things go out of hand!). Sometimes many owners decide to rub their dog’s noses in the mess or hit them, but relax! That’s not the way to handle things. It does nothing but makes your dog afraid of you and not trust you. Trust me, you don’t want that.
